The single highest-impact purchase in an indoor grow — light is the plant's food source, and underpowered lighting is the most common reason a beginner grow underperforms. Buy based on your tent's footprint, not on wattage alone; two lights with the same wattage can put out very different usable light depending on diode quality and spectrum.

How to choose

  1. 1

    Coverage area, not just wattage

Match the light's rated coverage (in square feet) to your tent size. A light rated for a 2x2 footprint will leave a 4x4 tent badly underlit even if the wattage number looks reasonable.

  2. 2

    Full-spectrum output

Look for lights that cover both the blue-heavy spectrum plants want in veg and the red-heavy spectrum they want in flower, ideally adjustable rather than fixed to one ratio.

  3. 3

    Diode quality

Named diode brands (like Samsung's LM301B series) are a reasonable proxy for efficiency and longevity when a listing doesn't give independently tested output numbers.

  4. 4

    Heat and hang height

More efficient lights run cooler and can hang closer to the canopy without stressing plants — worth factoring into small, low-ceiling tent setups.
